Troubleshooting File Download Problems

If you're having trouble downloading a software or program file from our web site, check the following symptoms for suggested causes and solutions.

Unable to connect and start a download:
If your unable to establish a connection at all or cannot even start a download.

  1. Make sure you have an updated version of a browser such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer (version 5 or higher).

  2. If you're trying to download software and get a message like, "Web page [or site] cannot be found" Your web browser may not understand .exe type files. To fix this problem, check your browser's preferences to be sure that it is set to recognize .exe files.

Corrupt Files Messages:
After downloading a file and it doesn't install or run correctly or you get a corrupt file or size mismatch error message.

NOTE: corrupt file error messages does not mean there is something wrong with the program or files that you are trying to download from our server. All original file versions on our servers have been tested and verified not to be corrupt. Files are usually always corrupted or damaged during or after the download process which can be caused by a number of things, most common is line interferences or your Internet provider's server is overloaded. Other common causes can be from software conflicts or browser issues, refer to the list of common causes provided below. Also read the "Setup Initialization Errors" section following the list of common issues.

  1. Internet Service Provider Problems - Most of our downloads using an ordinary dial-up modem will take from 10 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the download and the quality of your ISP connection. If your download has taken a VERY LONG TIME, there is a good possibility that your ISP is modem sharing due to overcapacity. This has the potential of corrupting the download because it is being broken up into parts rather than streaming the file to you in one continuous session. Also keep in mind that the connection between your computer and our server is not simply handled by your DSL, cable, or dial-up service - that's only one link in a very long chain. The cure for this is to try downloading when your ISP is less busy.

  2. Internet Congestion - This is the same problem as above expect that it is not your ISP's fault. It is simply that the main "pipes" passing Internet traffic into your town are full. Again, try downloading when the Internet is not so busy. Off-peak hours include early in the morning or after midnight.

  3. Be sure that your browser is not set to automatically disconnect after a certain number of minutes of inactivity .... open your Internet Explorer browser and under "Tools" at the top select "Internet Options" then click the "Connections" tab then click on "Settings", be sure that "Disconnect if idle for __ minutes" is unchecked.

  4. Also consider disabling your screensaver to ensure that it does not interfere with the download.

  5. Another common issue with not being able to complete downloads is spyware or a Trojan or Worm getting into your system which is attempting to hi-jack your browser which can often make it very difficult to complete larger downloads and can even corrupt system files and it's highly recommended that you scan your system with a good ant-virus software scanner.

  6. Browser Cached Files - Too many cached web pages sitting in your Temporary Internet Folder can also bog down browsers. Another problem is that most web browsers cache recent downloads as well, which means they keep copies to make subsequent downloads faster. But, if your download was corrupt, your cached copy will be corrupt as well. This means that you'll have to clear your browser cache before attempting to download again.

To clean out the cache files from the Temporary Internet Folder:

For Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 and higher follow these instructions:

    • Go into the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
    • In the Temporary Internet Files area, select Delete Files
    • Don't click the Delete all offline content box. Click OK.

If you are using Netscape Communicator follow these instructions:

    • Go into the Edit menu and select Preferences.
    • Click the little plus sign next to ADVANCED.
    • Select the Cache option.
    • Click "Clear Memory Cache" and "Clear Disk Cache," then click OK.

  7. ISP Cached Files - Many large and well known ISPs also cache files and store local copies of a file when it is first downloaded by one of their subscribers. This saves them bandwidth and generally makes good sense. However if the first person's connection closed prematurely, an incomplete version of the file remains in the ISP's cache and everyone else gets the broken version rather than a fresh copy from our servers until the cached version expires at the ISP. Unfortunately the only solution is to wait a while before trying again, ISP cache expirations can vary from provider to provider, taking anywhere from several hours to 24 hours.

  8. Anti-Virus Software - Another cause of download corruption is improperly-configured anti-virus software. Some virus protection software products have been known to corrupt an EXE file during downloading or may warn you of the dangers of downloading EXE files. Try disabling your virus protection software for the download. Then, if you are leary of our intentions, perform a virus check on the download file AFTER it is complete.

  9. Do not try to use so-called download speed enhancers. They try to compress files. Our EXE and ZIP files are already compressed. Any additional compression is likely to corrupt the file.

Try Another Web Browser:
Get Firefox
Another option is to install Mozilla's Firefox. Firefox is a free, open-source and cross-platform web browser for Windows, Linux, MacOS X and other operating systems. It is small, fast and easy to use, and offers many advantages over other web browsers with an excellent download manager and built in pop-up killer. We all here use Mozilla as an alternative browser especially for heavier and more demanding surfing and downloading, we have tested most major browsers and have yet to find one with better download tasking. It's always highly recommended to install an alternative browser as a backup rather than strictly relying on your default browser, especially if you use MSN or AOL browsers which are extremely slow and overloaded with restrictions.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We are not affiliated with Mozilla or FireFox in anyway, or are we making any money for advertising this product. We have no hidden agenda, we simply believe in this product and are recommending to you strictly as a service.

Try Using An Alternative Download Manager:
Download Express is a plugin replacement for the standard IE download manager and there is also a version for Mozilla's Firefox available as well. Their download management technology has been proven to be effective in reducing the chances of file corruption during the download process and has been reported by some of our users in resolving issues with being able to successfully complete downloads, especially those with poor ISP connections. It doesn't use file compression methods to speed up downloads which is commonly used in download speed accelerator programs which often only further contributes to file corruption. Download Express contains no adware or spyware and best of all it's free! Download Express

Setup Initialization Errors

Problem Description:

When installing DesktopMates software, General Setup Initialization Errors may occur.

Solution Summary:

General Setup Initialization Errors are usually system related and may be best solved by attempting to eliminate each possible cause, one at a time.

Below are some of the more common causes and solutions for Setup initialization errors:

Problem A conflict with a concurrently running program such as a screen saver or virus scanning program.
Solutions Shut down any concurrently running programs and attempt to run the installation again. This includes any virus checking software or screensavers that may be running in the background.
Problem Install Directory related problems.

Solutions

  1. The Path name to the install program may be too long. For example it may currently be residing in C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\Download Files\New Files\BrandySetup.exe or something like that. Try moving it to your desktop and run the install setup there.
  2. Make sure that there is enough free space to run the install program. If not, free up some space and attempt to run the installation again.
  3. Make sure that the user has write privileges to this directory.
  4. Delete any InstallShield files left in this directory. If a file cannot be deleted because it is in use, the system should be restarted. Then delete the files that needs to be deleted and retry the installation.
Problem User does not have write privileges to the Windows or Windows\System directory.

Solutions

Make sure that the installer has write privileges to the Windows directory and Windows\System directory. The installation program must have write access to these directories. If necessary, a system administrator who has the appropriate privileges may need to perform the installation.

Problem Setup executable file is read-only.
Solutions
  1. Make sure that the setup.exe file is not marked as read-only. Right click on the file and select "Properties" and see if the Read-only box is checked and un-check the box if it is.
  2. Note: Some virus checking programs automatically mark all .exe files as read-only. If a Setup.exe file is found to be read-only, all virus-checking programs should be terminated before running any Setup.exe files.
Problem Setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application.
Solutions
  1. The downloaded file has an unexpected extension (e.g., *.zip instead of *.exe). Re-name the downloaded file so that its filename extension matches the filename extension on the page from which it was downloaded.
  2. Download the file using a different Web browser.
  3. Remove and then reinstall Internet Explorer, then redownload the file. Internet Explorer uses the registry in Windows to determine what filename extension to use for downloaded files. If registry keys are damaged or missing, Internet Explorer may assign files an incorrect extension, which will prevent the system from opening them. Reinstalling Internet Explorer rewrites damaged or missing registry keys.
  4. What can also cause this to happen is that you could have a W32 virus which is messing up your registry files, it can lay there and appear dormant for months and just gradually play havoc with your Win32 registry files.
Problem Windows XP "Error in 16-Bit-Application".
Solutions This error problem can happen on some Windows XP and NT systems which seems to be a glitch with the Microsoft windows installer or a setting in the windows registry and has nothing to do with the application or program your trying to install.

Try right clicking on the programs setup that you downloaded and select "Properties" then "Compatibility" then try choosing a different compatibility mode from the list (NOTE you need to check the box for the list to become active).

Problem Corrupt files error messages.
Solutions
  1. Try downloading the Setup.exe file again (also try at less peak hours if your using a dial up connection).
  2. Run ScanDisk on the system's hard drive to see if there are any bad sectors. If necessary, fix any problems.
  3. Check your system for any viruses or trogan worms etc.
Problem Problems installing from a network drive or CD-ROM drive.
Solutions If the Setup.exe installation is being run from a network drive or CD-ROM drive, try moving and running the Setup.exe file on a local drive ... example drive C:
Also be sure you have the latest updated versions of Microsoft's Windows installers.

Windows Installer 2.0 for Windows 95, 98, and Me

Windows Installer 2.0 for Windows NT 4.0 and 2000

NOTE: Windows XP already uses the Windows Installer version 2.0.
